IN an attempt to improve language teaching in schools, the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) and Jika Imfundo/ Improve Learning Outcomes (PILO) are conducting language workshops in uThungulu district schools to empower teachers.
NECT conducts a series of workshops every term. The intention is to improve language proficiency in schools, resulting in better communication.English first additional language (EFAL) is one subject which has received attention through these workshops.The aim is to see at least 90% of pupils achieving50% in maths, science and languages by 2030.The 2015 school year kicked off with EFAL workshops in February covering 238 high schools in the uMfolozi, Nkandla, uMlalazi, uMhlathuze and Mthonjaneni circuits.
The targeted grades were 4, 8 and 9. The second round was held in May. The workshops resumed last month, reaching pupils in Grades 5 to 12. Teachers expressed their appreciation for the pro-gramme, which they say is enhancing their teaching skills. A teacher from Ntolwane Primary said overcrowding in classrooms was still an inhibiting factor.
‘Some of the pupils take time to understand, but because of time constraints we have to move on.
‘But since I started attending the NECT workshops I have learned new methods of conducting my lessons, such as shared reading which helps pupils better understand what they read.’
